You Lose, You Win!
Lesson idea: Believing in Jesus means you never loose. When you are in Christ Jesus, even when you sin (lose), God sees His perfect son, who never sinned, when He sees you (win!).
Discuss: Do you like to play games? Do you like to win games? Of course you do! Do you like to loose games? Not really right?
Imagine that you are playing one of your favorite games. Imagine you are playing that game again and again but every single time you play the game you lose. However, every time you lose someone runs up to you and gives you high fives and says “You Win!” (demonstrate or act this out for fun if you like) Imagine you have played a game on the computer or a phone and you played that game 100 times and every time you lost the game. However, every time you finished the game instead of seeing the words “You lose” or “Try again,” the words, “You’re a Winner” flashed across the screen. How would that make you feel? Loosing wouldn’t feel so bad would it? It would feel the same as winning. Great! But wait, life isn’t’ really that way though is it? What if it could be?
Key verse: Let’s read Romans 8:1-2 together.
“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.”
Bible application: Let’s talk about what that means for a minute. “There is therefore now no condemnation…” What is condemnation? The dictionary defines it as “a very strong and definite criticism or disapproval.” When you are condemned it’s like you messed up and you are being judged. When you disobey your parents you might experience this. If your mom or dad asked you to do something and you looked at them and said, “No,” I’m pretty sure you would get strong disapproval and judgement from them, that’s like condemnation. You would have that feeling of loosing right? When we mess up, when we sin, we feel like we have failed. We lose. Let’s read the next part of the verse now. “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” 2 Corinthians 5:17 tells us exactly want it means to be “in Christ”. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”
To be “in Christ” means you believe that Jesus paid for your sin, your lost and failed moments. The old you is gone and the new has come, just like a caterpillar is gone once it turns into the new creation of a butterfly. So, do we stop sinning then when we are a new creation? No, we still live with sin. We deserve to loose. This is why we need Jesus, we need to be “in Christ.” The second half of the verse says, “For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.” Once you believe in Jesus you are given new power through the Holy Spirit who lives in you to help you fight sin, and you become a new creation. You will still loose a lot and you will still sin, but you know that Jesus took your sin upon himself and made you a winner.
Drive it home: When you believe in Jesus, you always win! Even when you sin, God sees His perfect son, who never sinned, when He sees you. Even when you loose, God sees a win because He sees Jesus. That is so awesome! Is this a free pass to sin anytime then? I can do whatever I want and I win no matter what, so sin away right?! NO. Of course not! When you are a new creation the old is gone and the new has come so you will want to love and please your Heavenly Father by keeping His commandments.
The next time you lose when you are playing a game or the next time you mess up when you are trying something new think about this. When you sin, fail, and loose, even then, you win when you are in Christ Jesus!
Let’s pray and thank God for this amazing gift!
Pray: Heavenly Father, Loosing is hard. Sin is hard to live with. No one likes to feel condemnation, judgment, or disapproval. It’s such great news for us that you loved us so much that you sent Jesus to take away our losses so that even when we sin, we win because of Him. Thank you for loving us so much. We pray that we will always put our trust in you and in the truth of your Word. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
Sing: sing 2 Corinthians 5:17 with Seeds Family Worship @ http://www.seedsfamilyworship.com/release/seeds-of-faith-vol-2/. It is song 12 on the list.
Activity: 1. Play a game with your family and celebrate winning no matter what the outcome. High five the looser of the game and say “You win!” Emphasize that when they are in Christ the best thing that could happen to them, the best win, has already happened so there is no fear in loosing ever again.
Memorize Romans 5:8 and use for additional discussion throughout the day, night, or week: “… but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners (losers), Christ died for us.”
